Studded Tire Recommendations
« on: October 12, 2016, 10:37:39 AM »
Looking to get a set of cheap studded tires for the winter car. 225/45/17. Tires will be used on the street mainly along with the occasional jaunt on Ghost Lake (SASC School's and Ice Cup), studs will be the regular size studs (not oversized). There appears to be quite a few options in the $75-125/tire range (see below). Any recommendations on which is best bang for the buck? Which has the most studs?

Ironman - Winter HSI-S
Maxtrek - Trek M900 Ice
Sailun - Ice Blazer WST1
Westlake - SW606

I would suggest a narrower tire.

Some rally guys use the SW606, I use the Himalaya WS2.

If you're just getting these for ice racing, listen to Adam above. Smallest wheel, lowest width cheap wal-mart studdable tire you can get and fit.

I'm on my third set of studded Champiro Ice Pros, same tires I ran on my ATS on the lake last year that I saved and swapped onto my Subaru. I really like them, price is right, not overly noisy, they do ok on the lake.

To add to this, they are a really durable tire too. I hear that some cab companies will install these tires on their cabs, and run them year round, changing them after 60,000km or so.

For performance on the lake you'd want a softer tire  but since you aren't going with oversized studs that does't matter I guess.

We bought a set of studded General Altimax Arctic tires for the van 3 years back.  It performs quite well on the street and did well out on ghost lake as well.  We have them on about 6 months of the year or about 8,000-10,000km per year and after 3 winters tire wear has been reasonable - they look like they have about 3 more years to go before they get under 50% tread and I'll get rid of them.

Had a set of Nexen Winguards. Bought these tires at 4wheelonline because they are almost half the price of the premium winter tires I run before.
