Hmmm, I never knew 'Boy Racer' had quite those connotations. Staying within the legal nise limits may not be enough, I think we ought to set a threshold X below the legal limit to appease the public.
My understanding of the City of Calgary bylaw is that technically with the exception of things like Restaurant and Bar patio noise, there is no prescribed legal limit....essentially if anyone is put off by your noise they can complain at any time.

No person shall permit a vehicle located on a Premises to emit noise which
emanates from that Premises and disturbs or annoys a Person, including noise

allow to be made or continued any noise which disturbs or annoys a Person,

Not sure if anyone has noticed, but exhaust noise was not the issue here.
As far as db testing tire squeel, you can get all kinds of readings based on where the meter is relative to the tire, on course, etc. hence why our regs have a standard measuring process.
Quote from: Stuart on July 28, 2010, 04:25:09 pm
I have to point this out because I heard the guy complaining at the event. Tire noise was his main complaint, therefor any talk about "boy racers" or the types of exhaust used causing us to lose the venue should be avoided. Some cars and exhausts may be too loud but it's far more constructive to discuss this with them personally and not just calling out a whole segment of the club and blaming them for something that was not their fault alone as most cars not running R-comps were squealing that day.

Hey Shawn, where were you at the time? Be interesting to know how the sound carried from Prince's Island. I betcha they get complaints too (anyone know about this?). Maybe Calgary is the new city of whiners? Lots of whining about the Olympics in Vancouver too! They lost Indy.....

Reijo ... at my place near Center St. and 40th Ave North
I wouldn't complain - I think those events are good for the city both economics and stuff for people to get out and enjoy ..... just like motorsports!
People need to figure out this is a city - million + people - there is going to be noise and things happening - heck I live across the street from a high school and the stereo systems that drive by are louder than most of our cars and events.
Now those who break into cars and damage property should have their whatever smacked a good one (twice this week)

Sorry, but "Boy Racer" or not; people need to be measured by the same stick.
Pick a noise level and go with it... I don't think it matters if you spend $50,000 on modifications or $50 on a rusty fart cannon; if it comes in over the set db limit that person should fail tech inspection.
Quote from: Stuart on July 28, 2010, 04:36:23 pm
I don't believe that the Calgary bylaws applied as we were on the reserve, so complaints to the casino (or through city hall to the casino) are all that would matter from a strictly legal point of view. The casino obviously didn't want their neighbors to be upset, we could have been at 50 Db and still had the same issues.
This is true, we lost the Grey Eagle venue most likely due to pressure from the city & one NIMBY with an unfounded complaint... not much else.
The city is pretty much quietly committed to ending motorsports within it's limits; I am sure the second that 311 gets a call about a noisy car event, phone calls are made, threats are issued to the property owners and police are dispatched to check up on it... (although most times the police end up doing a few runs with us instead).
I would glady welcome city enforced noise limits because it would at least give us a leg to stand on; as it stands right now, any noise complaint is treated as a violation without proof or a chance to defend ourselves.

Grey Eagle was not pressured by the city. They recieved complaints from their neighbors and at least one patron. The Calgary and TsuTina police also responded to noise complaints. In the interest of being good neighbors and not chasing away their patrons, they withdrew the use of their parking lot for these types of activities.
Noise WAS the culprit that effectively got us kicked out whether from 10 year old BFG TAs squeeling like a stuck pig on every corner or a carbon fiber muffler hanging off the back end of an Acura revving to 100000 rpm in neutral or first gear. It doesn't matter where the sound came from, it killed the venue. Happy?

We all knew that noise was the culprit, just a mater of how we could counter it.

Alas this is one reason why i dont really come to autocross events anymore.
While i love racing down to my core, its become a chore. The constant worrying about breaking things, tire noise, venue noise, blah blah blah. Im not saying this is something i do, but it honestly is just easier to race on the street now. I guess the city gets what they want, they dont want legally sanctioned race events, fine, ill just take my fun elsewhere.
Honestly i have to say im pretty fed up with calgary and Alberta in general. Im trying to think of a few single positives to living here outside of Jobs...
Weather? Sucks balls
Economy? Isnt that great anymore
Community/Spirit? That hasnet been around for the past 10 years, everyone wants money and things NOW and thats it.
Honestly, whats the incentive for being here?
Sorry for rambling but i just get so bothered by the amount of negativity when it comes to doing anything in this city. Shit the last time i went to a CSCC event which was deerfoot #2 i can honestly say i had a mediocre time. It seemed like 90% of the drivers had an attitude of "Im the cool kid" and anyone outside of the regulars was left to their own vices with little or no interaction.
Now i cant even run my car at an event without it ruining the fun for everyone else? I guess thats why i didnt renew my subscription for the CSCC and didnt plan on hitting anymore events.

I sorry you felt left out at the event, but it is natural for people to socialize more with the people the know...
I know I felt the same way have my first event in Calgary.

Hmmm, I never knew 'Boy Racer' had quite those connotations.
What connotations did YOU think it had? It hasn't been mentioned that the "boy racer" himself typically hates snobby pricks who drive Loti, Porsche's, Ferrari's and other "real sportscars."
I assume that I AM the "boy racer" of the day. I was on street tires, there were two drivers, and there was a section that had us over 6000rpm in first gear for a few seconds on each run.
Someone did tell me I was the loudest car at the event.
I am not against strict noise regulations at all, and this thread really makes me wish someone had a meter at the event. Surprisingly... I have run the same car in the past with nothing but a straight through CARBON FIBER bike muffler. This year it has a resonator, and a full size baffle type muffler. It sounded better before IMO... but IT IS quieter.
I'm getting old, and actually feel the need to gain the respect of my neighbors and random passers-by. I've even removed all my DRAGON stickers.
Quote from: unclebilly on July 28, 2010, 08:45:14 pm
I also feel it is too loud to take my newly born son in without hearing protection.
You and I might both be up for "Father of the Year." No way my daughter is going for a ride in my car. It's not the noise I'm worried about though... it's the gang violence and the fear that as a street racer with no restraint I might get carried away with her in the car.
----------------------------------------------
In seriousness though... I am pretty torn up about losing Grey Eagle. I do have a few friends with Loti, and even know a couple of nice Porsche drivers. I'm going to build another new exhaust this winter... but I'll still be on skinny street tires next year (I have a tonne of spares left over from 10 years ago).

Sorry to say, but the Deerfoot Mall events are a victim of their own popularity. Everybody wants to run in a local venue, so we end up with more first timers than we get at any other time. At the event in question, there were 19 first timers -- one third of the entire field.
First timers are nice to have (well, most of them), but too many of them and it's impossible for the regulars to do a good job of making everyone feel welcome. And keeping the "I'm so cool" people a bit humbled too

Your car wasn't too loud, at least the last time I heard it. Come to one of the out of town events -- much smaller crowds, and almost all regulars. Ask me for a ride; I am a better driver since the last time you sat in the passenger seat

Really? Who? I can guarantee you that there aren't any cool people who Autocross. You won't see any of them in any hipster dive bars, for sure. I've met Trekkies who are far cooler. Hell, I've met 40 year old Dungeons and Dragons players who are waaaaay cooler. In fact, saying "I autocross" is a guaranteed lay killer (edit:) Especially if you add, "...and I pax consistently within top ten."
You'd have a better chance of dropping dresses talking about how you strung miles of code in order to better fine tune your CGI remake of Tron.
Now drifters. They're WAAY COOL.
